Gallery Pictor

We are pleased to have Mitsuko Hoshino Solo Exhibition Wind and Pine from Saturday, 7th January  through Sunday, 29th January, 2023.

Hoshino carefully observes things in nature and their relationships to each other, gently scoops them up, and creates works that seem to be reproduced using different materials and on different scales. Her perspective begins at the level of what we can sense with our five senses, sometimes moves into the microscopic world of matter, sometimes into the vastness of the life-space, or into the far reaches of time and space.

In this exhibition, she attempts to show the traces of communication between the two pine trees in her garden, the wind blowing through their branches and leaves, and Hoshino herself, as they spend time together and interact with each other, like a swaying dance.

Artist Statement (excerpt)

The view from the windows of my studio, with the familiar thick trunks of these two pine trees with their branches spreading out and swaying incessantly at the ends, and with their abundance of tightly bundled pine needles, gives me a peculiar sensation that overlaps with all the ‘pine trees’ in my distant memory, transcending time and space; as if the little girl – this time me – was again hiding quietly in the thicket of branches.

Wind is breath, pine trees are the bodies, drawings are the traces of communication. In this exhibition, I present two series of drawings. The first was made facing the pine trees swaying in the wind, and the second is ‘Needle Trace’, inspired by the pine needles blown by the wind to be scattered on the ground in groups and patterns [resembling humans displaced by the ravages of oppression or war].

Hoshino’s works often use wind, water, and other naturally occurring fluids as motifs.
