We are pleased to have Reina Mikame Solo Exhibition Deconstructing the Periphery from Saturday, 19th August  through Friday, 8th September.

Mikame has been attempting to deconstruct the visible image through the several series sucha as Looking at the Line, Looking at the Color, and Unraveling the Color. Those body of works seem to question the instability and uncertainty of what we judge as having “captured” or “recognized” a subject through our sense of sight.

This time, she chose “a glass of water” as the motif. Water, glass—we already know their properties, textures, and uses, but is it possible to forget them and see them purely as an object?  Or can we get closer to the subject by focusing on our experience, culture, and the environment of the moment on the periphery of the glass?

Also, don’t miss how Mikame, who excels in the stoicism of exploring a single motif, ‘plays’ with the subject.

Reina Mikame’s Statement

It is clear that to see or depict this subject, it is not only about capturing the slightest shadow of glass and water.

Most of the phenomena you see in front of you are created by the surroundings in which the glass of water is placed at any given time, but drawing those surroundings and drawing the glass are not at all equal. The staying water and the behavior of the light blur the boundary between the surroundings and the glass.

The shape of the glass in your hand is deeply connected to its function and culture, and this shape is the best proof to depict those information, but if you take your hand off the glass and place it on the table, you will also distance yourself from its function.

The fact that the glass of water exists only as an object seems to be derived from its periphery, including the surroundings and information.

If the periphery of the glass reveals the glass, I would like to consider the possibility of approaching this subject by learning about its periphery.

I depict the subject in front of me, while each of the perspectives from which I have depicted a glass of water over the past several years is also put onto playful motion as a periphery.
